Round 6 - Kageyama, "a story", Fic & FST (●)
Pseudonym: Kageyama
Title: a story
Characters/Pairings: Touya Akira, Shindou Hikaru, other go professionals
Rating: PG-13
Warnings/Contains: a chance of violence
Summary/Notes: Touya was an Heir who was friends with the drifter, Shindou.
There they were, the clashing, reverberating sounds of the City. Touya Akira had rarely heard it first-hand - the Meijin district was a crowned District, and he studied within said district confines. But Shindou had told him to go here, and so here he was.
The other boy was late, and Touya kept a hand to his belt, making sure his gloved hand rested on the stun gun he had there. He'd laughed when Ogata had given it but he's learned since it was better safe than sorry.
The City was not a happy place. It's a little better off than the rest of the country, and yet the constant earthquakes had taken their toll on the the buildings and its inhabitants. The streets were crowded and lively during the day as people tried to eke out a living. As soon as night falls they disappear into the shadows, the lamp posts staying unlit. The populace had already jacked the electric lines to supply power to their houses.
He looked up when he heard the familiar rev of a motorcycle. It was bright yellow and black, and he'd taken to calling it the Bumblebee. Shindou had hit him when he said that aloud.
The motocycle rider took off his helmet. "Hey, sorry I was late!" Shindou greeted, casual as always. "Were you waitin' long?"
"Not particularly," he replied. They'd met just last month, after he'd gotten mixed up with people over at Oza. Shindou had come to his rescue, and was impossible to shake off since. Not that he really minded.
"Want to meet a couple of my friends?"
"Sure." He switched off his visor and pulled it down to his neck before taking the helmet the other boy kept for him. He got on the bike and let Shindou drive.
The crowd parted as the Bumblebee raced through the streets. Though the visor was off, Touya had kept the earpiece on, and it supplied him with directions and the Districts they were going through. Some people would say it was information overload, but Touya had been raised since birth to deal with S-tech, and he found it as necessary noise.
He'd never taken off the visor aside from the motorcycle rides with Shindou. It was just part of his life to see words obscure the world. He had to admit that Shindou was refreshingly blank in a world where a dossier was flashed the moment you see someone. All Shindou had tagged on him was his name, his hometown, a couple of minor infractions as a boy. S-tech had little information on him because Shindou was a rarity in these times.
One who didn't use S-tech.
Someone Clear. Shindou had said it was because S-tech was not mandatory in the Area he came from, but Touya knew Shindou had some sort of enhancement. He'd seen the flash of metal hidden in the other boy's right glove. S-tech had nothing on said metal fist.
His thoughts were interrupted when Shindou finally drew to a stop. The earpiece told him they were at the Honinbou District, which was still within his allowed movement range. He hoped Ogata wouldn't check on him anytime soon.
Touya saw a glint off glass, and paused. Shindou turned to see what's up, and Touya shrugged. "I thought I saw someone tailing us," he muttered.
He looked back and the cam paused from its arc. He gave it a small nod and followed the rest.
"Come on," Shindou urged. They went in to a local fastfood joint, and Shindou headed straight to a crowded corner table. Touya froze.
His visor fed information as he glanced through the group. Faces were identified with high accuracy, names listed along with affiliations and security ratings. Two names were highlighted, and like in every gathering he's been to he nodded to them first.
The one with goggles lifted them up to his forehead. Touya's visor supplied the name as Waya Yoshitaka, presumed Heir to Honinbou.
"If it isn't Touya. Hey, glad you can join us!" His greeting was just the tiniest bit too cheerful, but there was no hesitation when he took off his right glove. Touya did the same, and they shook hands. The crowd he was in was definitely warmer once the protocol was observed. "Did Shindou tell you what we're after?"
"No?"
The girl marked as Nase laughed. "Well I hope you don't object to getting a little dirty then."
"Where are we going?"
"We're off to fight a war," Shindou said, doing his trademark manic grin.
Ashiwara called just as they were done cleaning up. Ogata was probbly getting antsy as he was slightly beyond curfew. (Who was he kidding? He was three hours past their agreed time.) He nudged on the answer button as he cleaned the last of the dirt from his gloves. Ashiwara's smiling face came to view.
"Heard from Ogata-san you went to the City, how was it?"
He kept his tone absolutely neutral, keeping in mind to stay with the past tense. "It was okay, Shindou was his usual crazy self and introduced me to the Insei."
"But Shindou isn't an Insei is he?"
"Not as far as I know. He and Waya are chummy so I guess that's why."
"Well knowing a gang or two in each district is always good. I won't tell Ogata-san though, he's sure to drone off about building trust" and here Ashiwara stressed his words with air quotes. Touya laughed.
But Touya knew Ogata would catch wind of it via the networks. He always did. Touya knew this because he'd seen the cams follow their trip throughout the city.
"Shindou still doesn't use anything S-tech, does he?"
"No."
Ashiwara hummed and looked away from the cam. "Well as long as he's clean I guess the Meijin won't be angry if you hang with him."
"How is Father?"
"Still the same. Overworked. But then you know that."
"Yeah."
"Well, I have a con call in a few. Call Ogata-san if you need help, okay?"
Did Ashiwara see through his ruse? "I will. Bye, Ashiwara-san."
When he was done Touya left the bathroom, and as he headed back to where the rest where he heard raised voices.
"You do know there's a reason why Heirs normally don't slum around, Shindou."
"Yeah, 'cause the loss of the direct Heir messes up with District politics."
"It's worse with the districts up around Central. I know Touya's -"
"Wait so Touya's a Heir?"
A pregnant pause as Touya facepalmed. He's sure Waya was doing the same.
"Didn't you know?!"
"I mean, yeah he's sheltered as fuck but still doesn't mean he's instantly an Heir."
"His passage through the district's been tracked ever since."
"Did you let me bring Touya here cause you want him to be friends with Isumi?"
"I-it's nothing like that."
He's thought Waya was the Heir for Honinbou. Touya stored this info for Ogata.
"Geez, it's all politics, isn't it? Build up trust between two future Leads, get better bargaining chips."
"Dammit, Shindou, it's nothing like that! Do you think I had time to bother with things like that during the split-second I figured you brought the Meijin's Heir into Honinbou territory?"
He had to give Waya more credit than he has. Waya hadn't let anything on, but Isumi had a good Right Hand with Waya.
"I've kept your secret safe, you need to trust me that it's nothing personal."
"All right."
Secrets. There could only be one secret when it came to Shindou, and that was obvious.
Touya sighed. He would have to deal with that sooner or later. But for now, he had to get in before the two start fighting for real.
