Round 1 - Kageyama, "The story of Isumi & The story of Ogata", Fic & Art (●)

Pseudonym: Kageyama
Title: The story of Isumi & The story of Ogata
Rating: G

The story of Isumi

You kept second-guessing your Go.

You’ve played Go for half your life. You had gone through what most people would call a boring childhood but it didn't matter. You had your Go and you had your friends, but you never felt confident you were strong. You competed but it was hard to feel that edge when you fought with friends. You defeat them, but you never learn this was your own power.

Then the pro exams happened.

You lost your chance to Waya. You were happy for him, he’s been your partner throughout your insei years, you knew how hard it’s been. But it wasn't just that. Your game with Shindou messed you up. You just couldn't believe how it played out, and you couldn't be happy for Waya, not completely that is.

So you went to China. Now you not only faced the subtle differences in their play style, you also faced the language barrier. Standard tourist phrases didn’t cut it. Since he could not speak with them with his mouth, he spoke with his hands, playing game after game with different members of the Chinese Go institute. They told him, why were you being so meek, and he realized he was afraid to take risk. He couldn't understand them, so he could focus on the board.

You came back to Japan and faced Shindou confident you could finally fight with him as equals. But he'd stagnated while you were gone, blocked by a pain you couldn't explain. He thanked you for showing him your Go, and you wanted to say, No, thank you, Shindou. For being a catalyst to make you learn more about yourself. For being there to show you how to be a stronger Go player.

The story of Ogata

Beer always made you reminisce.

When Akira was born, you had just been a Touya student for a year. At that time he was a three title-holder, and had just captured the Oza title. They joked that this child would grow into a monster, being in a place where Go was basically part of the existence.

And he was. Playing go as a toddler, learning with the best made him stronger than anyone his age. It also kept him imprisoned. More than once you and Ashiwara cajoled that he try something more fitting for his age, but he shook his head. He had grown up with adults, and he didn't know how to act with those his age. The jokes grew to mention how he was an old man in a boy's body, to which his mother gave a bitter smile.

There was a fondness in how you would keep an eye on their rivalry. You had no idea the boy who disrupted the children’s tournament four years ago was the same boy that unsettled young Akira. Unsettled him to the point he joined a high school Go club leagues below his skill level. Shindou became a rival you envied, because Shindou grew as Akira and he played. And it was amazing.

You took one more sip of his beer and watched the game unfold before you. It was net go, between Shindou and Touya, and the joked over the chat board at how terrible the game was going, when it was progressing beautifully. You don't regret playing a hand in making them meet. Not at all.
